LOOK FOR UPCOMING EARTH ART WORKSHOP AT SAN JOSE RAFT Saturday, March 3, 2012
EARTH ART: connecting science and art
- sketchbook, Redwood Tree drawing, endangered species picture and cloth bag
focus is on deforestation and conservation
- build, decorate and plant tree box, drawing cars and bikes
focus is on carbon footprint and green energy

Earth Art lessons create environmental motivation through exploration.  A simple drawing of a Redwood Tree can lead to
talk about native species and the carbon dioxide and oxygen cycle we share with trees.  An art project about endangered
species is an opportunity to teach about deforestation and our choice of farming over rain forest preservation.
Participants will have opportunity to try out four different art projects including basic drawing lessons.  The earth focused
art lessons have been presented in workshops for Kinder and 1st grade Ravenswood teachers, Palo Alto Community
Child Care teachers and at
San Jose RAFT.

COLLABORATIVE ART PROJECTS: community cultural art
Presentation of art projects that classrooms of students create by working together.  Many ideas are presented on how
students have successfully worked together to build community and cultural appreciation.  Two to three students can
create patterns on African necklaces and oceanic turtle shells or help each other build drums.  A group project is
demonstrated on how 20+ students can all participate to build a Native American, Ohlone, diorama.  This presentation is
based on my work as the director of
Cultural Kaleidoscope at the Palo Alto Art Center.  This workshop was given as part
of the Cultural Kaleidoscope 2010 Project Teams meetings.

DRAWING ANIMALS: using shapes to build confidence
Animals are loved by children of every age and learning how to draw a variety of creatures can help with observational
skills, fine motor skills and confidence.  Expand math lessons on shapes or science lessons on nature through drawing
animals and their homes.  Presentation based on experience teaching Palo Alto drawing lessons and week long summer
camps including; Tiger in The Jungle / Turtles, Lizards and Snakes / Bugs, Butterflies and Beetles / Animals and Their
Homes / Painting Animals.

FACE & FIGURE: create people in a variety of media
Collage, sculpture, paint and pencil can all be used to create characters.  Learn how to share artist magic with your
students, teaching them about proportions that all artists use.  Create everything from fashion design figures to cartoons.
Presentation based on experience teaching Palo Alto drawing lessons and week long summer camps including; Active
People / Circus Sculptures / Figure Drawing / Figure Sculpture.  Example of figure paintings at

FEEDBACK FROM ART TEACHERS:

Thanks so much for the great mini workshop you did last Saturday!! Everyone went away with great ideas, and a sample project to
share.  Although it wasn’t the same as a workshop, it was great to share your ideas with so many teachers!!

The collage project brought out VERY deep feelings in my Senegalese students;  Thank you for all your help.

You sure have some special talent with children!  It sure was fun watching your demo at the Claymation and no doubt that the kids
had a great time.  It was interesting to learn more about Indian stuff from the parents who chaperoned the kids today.  There is
always something new everyday!!
